What Is Consignee?

Receiver of the freight. A plain-English trucking glossary entry for owner operators and small fleets.

Consignee: A consignee is the person or business that receives the freight at its destination, as named on the bill of lading.

Why it matters to owner operators

Delivery windows, dock rules and unloading speed at the consignee affect your hours and any detention. Confirm appointment times and unloading policies before you arrive.

Example

A retail distribution center is the consignee on a load and requires an appointment time and a signature from receiving staff.
