Double Brokering: Double brokering happens when a broker or carrier that accepted a load passes it to another carrier without the shipper’s knowledge or proper authority, often keeping the difference. It is prohibited when done without authority and agreement, and is commonly linked to fraud.
Why it matters to owner operators
It puts you at risk of non-payment or cargo problems because the party who hired you may not be the real broker. Match the name on the rate confirmation to the broker’s authority and be careful if payment is routed to a different company.
Example
A carrier is booked by a company whose authority doesn’t match the name on the rate confirmation. The carrier delivers and later finds the original broker never hired them.
