What Is Detention Pay?

Pay for waiting too long. A plain-English trucking glossary entry for owner operators and small fleets.

Detention Pay: Detention pay is compensation a carrier can earn when it is held at a pickup or delivery location beyond the free time stated in the agreement.

Why it matters to owner operators

Waiting costs you money because your truck is not moving. Detention is not automatic: check the free time and hourly rate on the rate confirmation and keep arrival and departure times as proof.

Example

A rate confirmation allows two hours of free time. If the driver is held for five, detention may apply to the extra three hours, provided the times are documented and the broker approves the claim.
