How to Choose a Load Board

The right load board saves hours and finds better rates. Use this checklist to compare them.

What a load board does

A load board lists available freight from brokers and shippers on the spot market. Boards differ in the loads they carry, the data they provide and the tools they include.

Checklist

  1. Load volume for your equipment. Check that your trailer type and lanes are well covered.
  2. Broker data. Credit scores, days to pay and contact verification help you avoid risky loads.
  3. Rate insight. Market rate data helps you judge if an offer is fair.
  4. Tools. Search filters, saved searches, alerts, mileage and profit calculators.
  5. Price and plan. Compare monthly cost with the extra income it brings.
  6. Mobile experience. You need to book fast from the road.
  7. Fraud protection. Verified brokers and reporting tools.

Do not rely on one board

Many owner operators use two boards plus direct relationships with shippers. Top loads often go in minutes, so speed and relationships matter. A dispatcher can monitor several boards for you. Read our load boards guide for more.

Check your numbers

Whatever board you choose, always compare the rate with your cost per mile using the cost per mile calculator.
