What Is Operating Authority?

Permission to haul for hire. A plain-English trucking glossary entry for owner operators and small fleets.

Operating Authority: Operating authority is the federal registration that allows a for-hire carrier to transport regulated freight across state lines, commonly shown as an MC number.

Why it matters to owner operators

Without authority you must lease onto a carrier that has it. Having your own gives you control but also makes you responsible for insurance, filings and compliance.

Example

An owner operator gets their own authority and begins booking loads directly with brokers instead of leasing onto another carrier.
