What costs should I include in my cost per mile?
Include everything it takes to run the truck: truck payment, insurance, permits, ELD and software, fuel, maintenance, tires, tolls and parking. Add dispatch and factoring fees if you want your rate to reflect what you keep after them.
Should I use loaded miles or total miles?
Use total miles, loaded and empty, because empty miles cost the same to drive as loaded ones. Then compare the rate per total mile with your cost per mile.
