What Is Accessorial Charges?

Extra fees beyond the base rate. A plain-English trucking glossary entry for owner operators and small fleets.

Accessorial Charges: Accessorial charges are extra fees added to a freight bill for services beyond standard transport, such as detention, layover, lumper fees, extra stops, tarps or inside delivery.

Why it matters to owner operators

They can turn a decent load into a great one or make a poor load worse. Get accessorials in writing on the rate confirmation before pickup, because adding them afterward is difficult.

Example

A load with two extra stops and a tarp requirement pays a base rate plus accessorials for the stops and the tarp.
