Freight Class: Freight class is a standard classification from 50 to 500, used mainly in LTL shipping, that categorizes freight by density, handling, stowability and liability and affects the rate.
Why it matters to owner operators
LTL carriers use class to price shipments, and a wrong class can lead to reclassification and extra charges. Most full truckload rates do not use freight class.
Example
A shipment of dense, easy-to-handle goods falls in a lower class and costs less per hundred pounds than light, bulky, fragile goods.
