GVWR: GVWR, or gross vehicle weight rating, is the maximum loaded weight a vehicle is designed to carry, as set by the manufacturer. It includes the vehicle, fuel, cargo and passengers.
Why it matters to owner operators
GVWR affects licensing, such as whether a CDL is needed above 26,000 pounds, along with inspections, registration and the loads you can legally haul.
Example
A box truck with a GVWR of 26,000 pounds can be driven without a CDL in many cases, while one rated above that generally cannot.
