What Is RGN (Removable Gooseneck)?

Heavy haul trailer with a detachable front. A plain-English trucking glossary entry for owner operators and small fleets.

RGN (Removable Gooseneck): An RGN, or removable gooseneck trailer, has a front section that detaches so the deck can lower to the ground, letting heavy equipment drive or be winched on.

Why it matters to owner operators

RGNs haul heavy and tall machinery such as excavators and cranes. They are specialized, often involve permits and escorts, and need experienced handling.

Example

A carrier detaches the gooseneck, lowers the ramps, and drives a loaded excavator onto the deck before reattaching.
