What Is Tanker?

Trailer for liquids and bulk. A plain-English trucking glossary entry for owner operators and small fleets.

Tanker: A tanker is a trailer with a cylindrical tank used to haul liquids and bulk materials such as fuel, milk, chemicals or dry bulk powder.

Why it matters to owner operators

Tanker work needs a tank vehicle endorsement on your CDL and, for hazardous materials, a hazmat endorsement. Liquid surge also changes how the truck handles.

Example

A driver with a tank endorsement hauls milk between a dairy and a processing plant.
