What Is Linehaul?

The base freight rate. A plain-English trucking glossary entry for owner operators and small fleets.

Linehaul: Linehaul is the base charge for moving freight from origin to destination, not including fuel surcharge or accessorial fees.

Why it matters to owner operators

Knowing what is inside a rate helps you compare offers. A load with a low linehaul and a high surcharge can pay differently from one quoted all-in.

Example

A rate confirmation lists linehaul of $2,000 plus a $150 fuel surcharge, for a total of $2,150.
