Carrier Packet: A carrier packet is the set of documents and forms a broker requires before working with a carrier. It usually includes operating authority, a W-9, an insurance certificate, payment details and a carrier agreement.
Why it matters to owner operators
Many brokers will not book you until your packet is approved, so a complete packet speeds up your first loads. Nexloads helps carriers with broker setup packets.
Example
A new carrier sends a broker an MC number, W-9, certificate of insurance and payment details, then receives load offers once approved.
What is usually in a carrier packet
- A copy of your operating authority (MC number) and USDOT number
- A certificate of insurance listing the broker as certificate holder
- A signed W-9
- The broker-carrier agreement
- A notice of assignment, if you use a factoring company
- Bank or payment details, often collected through a carrier onboarding platform
Tips to get set up faster
Keep up-to-date PDFs of your authority, W-9 and insurance ready to send, and ask your insurance agent to turn certificate requests around quickly. Read the broker-carrier agreement for payment terms, fines and back-solicitation clauses before you sign it.
Broker setup is part of our truck dispatch services, so you are not filling out packets at a truck stop.
