What Is Partial Load?

Takes part of a trailer. A plain-English trucking glossary entry for owner operators and small fleets.

Partial Load: A partial load takes up only some of a trailer’s space or weight and may share the trailer with other freight. It sits between LTL and full truckload.

Why it matters to owner operators

Partial loads can fill space on a trip, but they often involve extra stops and coordination. Check the number of stops, how they are billed and how the schedule fits.

Example

A carrier hauls eight pallets for one customer and picks up a second small shipment on the same route.
