Step Deck: A step deck, or drop deck, is a flatbed trailer with a lower main deck behind a raised front section, which lets taller freight stay within legal height limits.
Why it matters to owner operators
The lower deck lets you haul freight that would be too tall for a standard flatbed, often without an over-height permit. Know your deck lengths and weight capacity.
Example
A carrier hauls a tall piece of machinery on the lower deck of a step deck so it clears bridges without a permit.
