What Is Load Securement?

Keeping freight from shifting. A plain-English trucking glossary entry for owner operators and small fleets.

Load Securement: Load securement is the use of straps, chains, binders, blocking and other devices to keep cargo from shifting or falling off during transport, following federal and state requirements.

Why it matters to owner operators

Poor securement is a safety hazard and can lead to citations or out-of-service orders. Flatbed drivers especially should know working load limits and recheck securement during the trip.

Example

A flatbed driver stops shortly after leaving the shipper to recheck straps and chains before getting on the highway.
