What Is Cargo Insurance?

Covers freight damage or loss. A plain-English trucking glossary entry for owner operators and small fleets.

Cargo Insurance: Cargo insurance covers loss of or damage to the freight a carrier is hauling, subject to policy limits, deductibles and exclusions.

Why it matters to owner operators

Brokers and shippers set minimum cargo limits, so check what a load requires before you book. Reefer carriers should also look at coverage for refrigeration breakdown.

Example

A pallet load is damaged in a collision, and the carrier’s cargo policy responds according to its limits and deductible.
