What Is Drop and Hook?

Swap trailers without waiting. A plain-English trucking glossary entry for owner operators and small fleets.

Drop and Hook: Drop and hook is a way of delivering freight where the driver drops a trailer at the facility and hooks to another trailer, loaded or empty, instead of waiting for loading or unloading.

Why it matters to owner operators

It saves waiting time, which means less detention and more productive hours. It requires pooled trailers, so owner operators with their own trailer usually need an arrangement before dropping it.

Example

A driver arrives, drops a loaded trailer in a numbered door, hooks an empty one from the yard and leaves within minutes.
