What Is Dwell Time?

Time spent waiting at a facility. A plain-English trucking glossary entry for owner operators and small fleets.

Dwell Time: Dwell time is the total time a truck spends at a facility for loading, unloading or waiting, from arrival to departure.

Why it matters to owner operators

Long dwell times cut into your hours of service and your income. Track arrival and departure for every stop so you can support detention claims and avoid slow facilities.

Example

A driver arrives at 8:00 and leaves at 12:30, so the dwell time at that stop is four and a half hours.
