What Is Dry Van?

Enclosed trailer for general freight. A plain-English trucking glossary entry for owner operators and small fleets.

Dry Van: A dry van is an enclosed, non-refrigerated trailer used to haul general freight such as packaged goods, retail products and palletized cargo. Standard dry vans are 53 feet long.

Why it matters to owner operators

Dry vans are the most common trailer on the road, so freight is plentiful and so is competition. Rates and loading speed vary widely by lane and shipper.

Example

A carrier picks up 24 pallets of packaged goods at a warehouse, seals the doors, and delivers to a retail distribution center.
