What Is Straight Truck?

Cab and cargo body on one frame. A plain-English trucking glossary entry for owner operators and small fleets.

Straight Truck: A straight truck has its cab and cargo area on a single chassis rather than a separate tractor and trailer. Box trucks, flatbed trucks and dump trucks can all be straight trucks.

Why it matters to owner operators

They are easier to maneuver in cities and at tight docks and are common for local and regional work, but they carry less cargo than a tractor-trailer.

Example

A straight truck makes several stops across a region, picking up freight at one location and delivering to multiple receivers.
