What Is Out-of-Service (OOS)?

Order to stop driving. A plain-English trucking glossary entry for owner operators and small fleets.

Out-of-Service (OOS): An out-of-service (OOS) order is issued by an inspector when a driver or vehicle has a violation serious enough that the truck or driver must stop operating until it is corrected.

Why it matters to owner operators

OOS orders cost you time, money and safety record points. Pre-trip inspections and legal hours reduce the risk.

Example

A truck with a brake defect is placed out of service until it is repaired and cleared.
